lucero-women-work

Punk / country rockers, Lucero return with 11 new tracks for their 7th studio album, "Women and Work". Like last album "1392 Overton Park", one immediately picks up on the presence of the horns section on the more upbeat numbers and I'm still not sure if its over the top and unecessary or not. While the soothing, whiskey fuelled vocals of Ben Nichols go a long way in the appeal of liking Lucero, I often feel their song selection lets them down. Usually some great swinging anthems are immersed by some slower fillers that tend to lose me a bit and this new album seems to have a lot of that happening. While this is sure to please any longtime fan of the band, I can't help but feel Lucero are bored with the confines of their trademark sound perhaps, the last track even has a gospel vibe to its sound.
