Soon after the release of "Join The Army" Suicidal was offered a major-label contract with Epic. 1989's "Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit Déjà Vu" was their first of three albums to go gold.
The album itself is represented as two fictional EPs―the first four tracks are Controlled by Hatred and the rest are Feel Like Shit... Déjà Vu. It features six new recordings―four of which are covers of No Mercy songs, one is a cover of Los Cycos, an outtake from the previous album's sessions, a shortened version of "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow" (as it is heard in the song's video) and the previously unreleased softer "Heavy Emotion" version of that song.
In 1987 No Mercy released their first and only album "Widespread Bloodshed Love Runs Red", and were about to record their second album with many new songs already when two members quit. Instead of recruiting new members, singer Mike Muir decided to "merge" the two bands by having guitarist Mike Clark join Suicidal Tendencies.
Clark took over much of the songwriting duties for Suicidal, shifting its style more to a melodic thrash metal sound similar to No Mercy's and what would have been No Mercy's second album became Suicidal Tendencies' third album, "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today."
Also of note is that Robert Trujillo (Metallica) appeared in the videos that promoted "Controlled by Hatred/Feel Like Shit Déjà Vu", however he was not a band member yet at the time the album was being recorded. He joined the band shortly after. The rumour that he was credited as Stymee on the album is false. Bass parts were mostly recorded by the two guitarists of S.T. (Stymee meant "S.T. why me")
A must have for any Suicidal Tendencies fan, "Controlled By Hatred/Feel Like Shit Deja Vu" has been out of press since its original release in 1989. Now it's back on vinyl with this limited edition colored 180-gram pressing from ORG.
