In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Mike Vallely has confirmed, what pretty much everybody already knew and what Ron Reyes hinted would happen, in that he'd become the new Black Flag singer.
In the interview Vallely says the band are writing new material and are going to right the wrongs of 2013. You can read the full interview here.
Below is Vallely's version of how events unfolded on stage in Perth that led to the deaprture of Ron Reyes. Over here is Ron's version. Believe what you want to believe.
"As manager on the 2013 tour, he says he saw Reyes grow "disgruntled" and "combative" over the course of the reunion. Vallely alleges the singer didn't jive with Ginn's goal of progressing the band, rather than celebrating the past, and that Reyes had attempted to quit previously. He says that when he interverned in Australia, he did so mid-set because he thought Reyes was going to "act out his grievances" and quit onstage. "I did not threaten him or physically remove him from the stage," Vallely says. "I just told him very plainly, very simply, that it was over. And he looked at me and he almost seemed relieved. Then he walked off the stage." Regarding the decision to elect Vallely as the new frontman, he said Ginn offered him the spot immediately after Reyes' dismissal. "Greg just felt like, 'I don't want the Black Flag name to fizzle out with this or be tainted with this record that's proven to be subpar compared to what the expectations for it were,'" Vallely says. "He told me he made a mistake by working with Ron and trying to pander to a sort of old-school thing. He just thought that I was the guy for the job. . . I'm not gonna say no to that."
Professional skateboarder and musician, Mike Vallely first saw Black Flag perform at City Gardens in Trenton, New Jersey in 1984. Crediting it as a life changing experience, Mike set forth from that show on an uncharted course of self-expression through his skating. Discovered by Stacy Peralta in 1986, Mike turned pro in 1987 and has had an un-paralleled skateboard career. His first band Mike V And The Rats was formed in 2001.
Greg Ginn and Mike first met in Long Beach, CA in May of 2003 when Mike V And The Rats started a supporting run of shows for Greg that would eventually lead to Mike doing a guest vocal spot at the Black Flag Reunion Shows in September 2003. A friendship was formed and Vallely become the reformed Black Flag's manager.
