Brooklyn rock band OBITS have announced their second visit to Australian shores, following their acclaimed maiden tour in 2012.
Obits occupy the space between various elements of the rock music genre, skirting garage, punk, surf, surf-punk and garage-punk (though, let's be clear…not surf-garage). It's true that, for the discerning listener, the four-piece bear a pleasing resemblance to such legendary rock acts Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Girls Against Boys and Pitchfork. Possibly Television or the Wipers. This is not coincidence! With the exception of those last two, Obits share members with all of those bands. They forge straightforward, head nodding rock'n'roll with a dark edge, jamming guitars a muscular rhythms. An exciting prospect, and an impressive offering in live practise. No fuss. Cool as f*ck.
Announced today is a whole throng of sweet local supports for the tour. Ranging from the mighty Six Ft Hick for Brisbane, to 90's indie-rock favourites Freak Wave in Melbourne, the much praised Kids Of Zoo and The Peep Tempel for Geelong, and so on and so forth.
"Our band has had a long-standing affinity for Australian rock'n'roll." says guitarist Sohrab Habibion "We often pretend the 25 million albums that Little River Band sold were secretly replaced with LPs by The Easybeats or The Scientists, maybe Radio Birdman or Rose Tattoo, with a few lucky folks getting a Cosmic Psychos EP or 'But Jacques, The Fish?' by The Celibate Rifles. Having enjoyed late night conversations and beer spilling with new friends, followed by avocado toast and coffee with old regrets in the mornings, it's no surprise we're eager to return. So if you spot four urine-soaked Americans with forks in their hair and toothpaste behind their ears, it's probably us, hoping not to be attacked by a drop bear while we try to find the first Sunnyboys 7"."
There you have it, ladies and gentleman. It should now be crystal clear that seeing Obits live in a sweaty, dark Australian rock'n'roll club is an experience you cannot afford to miss.
