For the first time, in a long and legendary history, BLACK FLAG will visit Australian shores as part of Hits & Pits 2.0 this November. No other band stands as iconic as the band from Hermosa Beach, California. Formed in 1976 at a time when, in the US, there was no path laid by any band before them, BLACK FLAG carved their own story, their own scene and inevitably lead the way for the multitudes of bands that would come after them. But with none matching the level of attitude and influence BLACK FLAG would leave behind.
Throughout BLACK FLAG’s tumultuous history there remained one constant and driving force. This was none other than Greg Ginn. Guitarist, songwriter and sole continuous member of the band whose albums and imagery would remain as iconic symbols long after the band disbanded, Ginn and his work through SST Records is the reason the modern day scene hold the DIY ethic in such strong esteem. There was no internet, there was no social networking, there was no scene. If you wanted it then you had to make it yourself and that's exactly what BLACK FLAG did.
In January 2013 the world gasped as Ginn and vocalist Ron Reyes united to reignite BLACK FLAG. Rounding out the lineup is Dave Klein from Screeching Weasel on bass and Gregory Amore from Gone on drums. This isn’t just a bunch of guys reuniting to play the old hits, this is BLACK FLAG back, putting the final touches on their first album in 28 years. They have already dropped two new tracks titled “Down In The Dirt” and “The Chase” released earlier this year through their website.
For the first time the band will carve their own history on Australian shores and in Australian venues but only on the Hits & Pits 2.0 Festival. There has never been and maybe will never be an event with royalty such as this.
But there is one more addition to the Hits & Pits 2.0 Festival today.
Mike Vallely has a career like no other. Known for his part in the development of skateboarding into a modern day sport, Vallely is also an accomplished musician, these days as front man of GOOD FOR YOU. His part in this band is only superseded by guitarist and band leader, Greg Ginn from BLACK FLAG.
When Ginn and Vallely combined their powers the end result is their debut release "Life Is Too Short To Short To Not Hold A Grudge" released earlier in 2013 through Ginn's label SST Records. The end result is an angst ridden recording of high energy rock songs blistered with themes of betrayal, regret, disillusionment as well as resolve, determination and independence.
Let's not forget the other amazing bands that have already signed up for Hits & Pits 2.0 including Bad Astronaut, Boysetsfire, The Ataris, Snuff, No Fun At All, Jughead’s Revenge & Off With Their Heads. This will be the experience of a lifetime. Our lifetime.
