Magandjin / Brisbane post-metal quintet SLOWCUT return with their first new music since the release of their debut album in 2023. The latest offering, a two track, 19 minute EP titled “flesh”, builds on and distills the cold, atmospheric sludge they were able to capture on their debut. Having been compared to genre heavyweights Isis and Neurosis, the band’s return brings a step up in the heaviness of their sound.
The opening track “threaded” taps into their stoner doom sensibilities, letting the ebb and flow of a riff guide the listener through space and atmosphere before slowing to a grinding halt in the climactic ending.
The closer “martyred” lulls you into a false sense of security before cold and crushing instrumentation somehow gets heavier and heavier for the remainder of the track. Jeremy Wittkopp’s scathing lyrics and vocal performance evokes visceral imagery, leaving you feeling empty and questioning your integrity by the end of the track.
The success of their debut record has allowed the band to move from strength to strength, their live performances leaving punters awestruck by beautiful atmospheres and crushing riffs. They have been lucky enough to be included on huge festival lineups at A Cold Day in Brisbane & Necrosonic, support doom titans Conan & Pallbearer, as well as selling out their own headline shows in Brisbane.
The band has stuck to a completely DIY approach to this release, their guitarist Ben Gibson once again at the helm to record, mix and master the EP at his own Gasworks Recording Studio and the band self releasing and pressing the record.
Together these two tracks are the natural evolution of SLOWCUT’s sound and give an exciting indication of things to come.
“flesh’’ will be available on all major streaming platforms from Friday 18 July 2025, as well as vinyl at their release show at Crowbar on Sunday 10 August 2025
