Gvrlls have released the new single ‘Collapse, And Still Lost’ from their debut EP, ‘Protect Us From The Ones We Love’, out 15 October on Art As Catharsis.
Sydney’s Gvrlls seem to fit in with the sludge scene as much as they do hardcore. In the last few years they’ve supported stoner metal legends High On Fire (USA), rising sludge stars Conan (UK), and noise/hardcore brutalists Full Of Hell (USA), with a support slot for post-hardcore trio Code Orange (US) just a few weeks away.
On their highly anticipated debut EP, ‘Protect Us From The Ones We Love’, Gvrlls batter listeners with a style of raw post-hardcore that draws as much from the chaos of The Dillinger Escape Plan as it does the textural layering and oppressive atmosphere of Neurosis. This is forward-thinking heavy music that radiates raw, cathartic intensity.
The group say their EP was inspired by major upheavals in their lives; that recording and writing these songs were a way for the band to channel that collective negativity into something cleansing. Perhaps it is this honesty - coupled with their expansive sound and the intensity of their live performances - that has helped them quickly build such a strong cult following.
Regardless, with ‘Protect Us From The Ones We Love’, Gvrlls have demonstrated why they are one of the most exciting bands to watch in the Australian underground. Fans of Gaza, Trap Them, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Converge would do well to check them out.
