CERES RELEASE NEW 7"/EP 'SELFISH PRICK'
Melbourne's charmingly unpretentious anthemic pop rockers CERES have thrown convention out the window and released a surprise 7"/EP today, complete with new video, a remix and hand stamped artwork. All on the eve of a spectacularly long tour with Violent Soho. Doesn't get much better than this, for the band whose debut album earlier this year earned them high praise as ones to watch.
Recorded in a Hobart studio over just four days, 'Selfish Prick' is a purposefully dynamic four track release. It lurches impressively from the summery emo-pop of the title track (featuring guest vocals by Luca Brasi) to gritty, angsty and highly moving 'Woodwork' and into banjo-laden, downtempo ditty 'Collarbone'. The real surprise is the Postal-Service-like remix of album track 'Three Times' produced by Charlie Gleason of local art-poppers Brightly, and mixed by Andrei Eremin who has recently had his hands full with artists like Chet Faker and Japanese Wallpaper.
Wrapped in woodcut artwork courtesy of Melbourne artist Andy Murphy, the band hand-stamped the record sleeves themselves. New video for 'Collarbones' charts the project...
Ceres have nailed down a frenetic, high energy live presence in a very short space of time. Warm and sweet, like the sickly punch in the chest of first love. The band's touring efforts have been lengthy and far reaching in 2014, yielding slots on the Poison City Weekender and 'Til The Wheels Fall Off festivals, and tours with emo-royalty Say Anything and Knapsack. Not to mention the band's own successful, self-booked national album tour and a ridiculous 23 dates in support of their newly found she-bros Violent Soho, kicking off today.
All signs point to the good things on the horizon for this most earnest quartet. Selfish Prick should be listened to with headphones, or at least with your chin up.
