Former member of No Apologies, Last Nerve and Restraint; Pete Abordi features in a new short interview clip from Stacey Surfboards. Former I Killed The Prom Queen frontman Lee Stacey is the shaper behind the brand who still maintains a strong connection between some of the surfers in the hardcore scene.
"When we look beyond the ocean, sometimes we find our biggest inspirations. At Stacey Surfboards we’re inspired by more than good surfing. We shape, we work. We build skate ramps with our kids. Surfing can sometimes run second place to shaping or work. Sometimes. Always.
Either way, we’re moved by trailblazers. We find inspiration in the heart and soul of people following a passion. That’s what our friend Pete Abordi has to us – heart and soul. Now 31, and originally from Sydney’s Maroubra Beach, I (Lee) met him through my old band, I Killed the Prom Queen. Pete was playing in a band called Restraint and we’d travel between Adelaide and Sydney to share stages. We found a strong connection in surfing. If you played in a hardcore band and surfed you were different. At the time, hardcore happened in inner-city suburbs nowhere near a beach. But we would seek it out. We would find new bands from reading liner notes inside record sleeves.
Pete was from Maroubra. I was from Middleton. Different waves, sure. Same something else, perhaps.
Pete stands out in the Australian hardcore scene for supporting what’s local. He’s put on shows all over Australia. He’s released a limited edition 7″ on his own label, Bloke Records, (Bloke being his nickname). It features some of Australia’s most honest bands including 50 Lions, Parkway Drive and No Apologies (Pete’s own band). His passion for home-grown authenticity in an era when kids have instant access to every overseas band is nothing but inspirational.
What he’s doing now depends on when you ask – electrician by trade, surfer by love, frontman by passion. Our paths still cross now. A decade later.
Surfing blokes inspire me as much as any front cover ever has. Pete and I still bond over the ocean. We still yarn about music. Sometimes we surf. Sometimes. I’ve asked Pete to start bringing you interviews, videos, stories, photos and more on anything we find inspiring. We want to share everything from the music we like to the artists we admire."
